vor allem im deutschen Südwesten verbreiteter Familienname:
1. Übername zu mhd. spuot »glückliches Gelingen, Schnelligkeit, Beschleunigung«, mhd. spuot »vonstatten gehend, leicht, erfolgreich«, schwäb. (veraltet) spütig »hurtig, wem alles rasch und gut gelingt«. Vgl. die Esslinger Belege: spute (a. 1409) = Spüte (a. 1411), spiet tucher (a. 1433), ruff spiet von ober esselingen (a. 1439).
2. In Norddeutschland handelt es sich hierbei um einen Berufsübernamen zu mnd. spit »Bratspieß; Stange oder Stock, woran Fleisch, Fische und andere Waren hängen« oder zu mnd. spit »Spatenstich, was man auf einmal mit einem Spaten aufwerfen kann; Torfstich auf dem Moor«.
