Berufsname. Im oberdeutschen, vor allem im alemannischen Bereich bedeutete auchten das Vieh zur Aucht, zur Nacht- bzw. zur Frühweide (mhd. uhte, uohte) führen. Der Auchter war also der Frühweidehirt. Im bairisch-österreichischen Gebiet erweiterte sich die Bedeutung von auchten, äuchten, eichten zu »das Vieh zu einer bestimmten Tageszeit weiden lassen«.
