1. Auf eine Kurzform von Rufnamen, die mit dem Namenwort helm gebildet sind (z.B. Helmbrecht), zurückgehender Familienname.
2. Berufsübername zu mhd. hлlm »Helm« für den Helmschmied oder Übername für den Träger eines auffälligen Helms.
